China’s biggest carrier China Mobile has its own brand phone OPhone which runs on a customized Android platform call OMS, now its rival China Unicom is following, having its own brand phone UPhone unveiled with several pictures published on Internet. Like OPhone, UPhone is also runs on a customized Android OS Uniplus. It’s said currently there’re at least three China manufacturers are producing UPhone for China Unicom. According to China Unicom, an APP store called Unistore will open to developers soon, and their APP store is compatible to Google’s Android Market.

No doubt what these so called customized Android platforms do are just add some built in services. From my experience that I learnt from people around me and Chinese tech community, consumers just don’t buy the bill. Original Android Phones from gray market are their loves. Developers? These app stores are completely jokes, full of bugs. Take China Mobile’s Mobile market for example, some developers even said they can’t complete the uploading of projects. Of curse the most important reason is that they just don’t trust these monopoly carriers.

Releasing these phones is more of a political decision than anything else… The carriers can loose money all day on them… no one really cares.
