While talking about China’s Shanzhai phones, you can never ignore this name MediaTeK ( MTK). Most of the nonsmartphones at the Shanzhai Phone market are powered by a MTK chipset. But when the world walked into the smartphone age, MTK acted very slowly. The launch of its first Windows Mobile enable chipset MTK6516 had failed to arrive until this March, but the Shanzhai smartphone market has been dominated by Huawei’s Hisilicon K3 Windows Mobile reference solution, which was out almost a year earlier than MTK6516.

Now MTK is back. Today the company announced to launch a Android-enable chipset in near future. it’s said manufacturers have received samples from MTK. This chipset will come with 3G networking support, and will launch to the market in fourth quarter. Good news for consumers is that phones powered by this chipset will just be priced around $100, and the bad news is that such phones won’t arrive very soon. According to MTK, you may be able to touch these phones in the end of this year or early next year. Hey, MTK, we hope you have more luck than you did with your Windows Mobile chipset MTK6516, or you will break Shanzhai phone makers hearts, again.
