Wabook company is bringing another Shenzhen-type surprise to the world by launching this 10-inch netbook that is only for $100 dollars. Of curse you can’t put too high expect on a netbook with such a price. It could only runs mobile operation systems, and was pre-installed with Windows CE 6.0. It’s said it could run Android OS too.

The netbook is very light, only 850g, and it is powered by a 300MHz ARM-based VIA 8505 chipset, packing a 10 inches 1024×600 display, 128MB RAM, 1G flash storage, a MicroSD card slot, 3 USB ports, 3.55mm headphone jack, and a 1800mAH battery. For such specs, what we could do is to pray for those who has got or is planning to get one can surf the Internet fluently with it.

I received my new toy today, a 10.2″ netbook from http://www.100dollarnetbook.com ($150.00 w/”free shipping”), a “Wabook”, powered by a VIA/Wondermedia WM-8505 RISC (Reduced Instruction Set Computer) processor, based on the (Advanced RISC Machines, INC.) ARM-9 core (ARM926EJ-S, to be exact). It features Windows CE 6.0, a stable operating system that looks and functions much like Windows XP, with some interesting exceptions. It comes packaged in a box with the netbook, a power adaptor/charger, and an instruction manual. Please have your “full oriental” on to read the manual, as it is (poorly) translated, and some talent and patience will be required at times to fully comprehend it.

After unboxing and charging the ‘book for a while, I found the first discrepancy: to turn the unit on, you must hold the power button down for a second or two – a quick press won’t turn it on. As it starts up, a Windows CE logo and “loading OS image” is displayed. Then the familiar Win XP music issues from the small, but useful, built-in speakers, and you’re ready to proceed. Click Start, and the familiar start menu pops up. Select Control Panel, and start personalizing your new machine. Set up your wireless connection (have your access point’s settings and “key” handy), or plug in a LAN cable to the port on the side and click on the icon in the system tray to initialize your (wired) network settings.

The unit’s keyboard feels great – as big as my other netbook, an MSI Wind U-120. It feels well-made and sturdy, but it does make some heat underneath, even with the low-power processor. The display is crisp and bright, just like all of those videos you may have seen on YouTube. You can plug a keyboard and mouse into 2 of the 3 available USB 2.0 ports if desired, and still have room for a thumb drive. The touch pad is over-sensitive when dragging and tapping, and movement can be a bit notchy at times if you have a heavy touch like mine.

Once you have everything set up and are on-line, you can test some of the apps. Clicking on any link in IE will open a new window automatically, which can quickly put a strain on the 128Mb of installed RAM. So will any graphics-intensive websites or e-mails. There is no Flash or Java installed – they must be integrated into the software on a machine like this before it leaves the factory, unless you are a developer and have a CE 6.0 SDK lying around. There is an installed .pdf reader, Foxit. Unfortunately, it is only a demo version, and no zoom function is included (press the zoom button, you get a nag screen). The built-in camera works, with easy to use software. There are some CE applications on the web if you are patient enough to look for them, but don’t expect installation to be as fool-proof as with x86 (2000, XP, Vista, etc.) versions of Windows.

Overall – this little gadget is pure genius. Boots fast, runs apps with few resources. You will have to experiment with the OS in order to get things customized to your liking. Most of what you need is here, but has been pared-down to run on what is basically an overgrown PDA, with a PDA-class processor, RAM, and storage. I may get brave at sometime in the future and investigate the possibility of adding more RAM, which I think would improve performance on the web. But for light browsing, e-mail, .mp3 music (have amplified speakers at hand), YouTube, social networking or IM (MSN Messenger is installed), this is the BOMB! Great for kids – if they grenade it, you’re not out a fortune. These (and improved models on the horizon) will be the future of mobile computing.
