Foxconn is building WAPI version iPhone for China Unicom

Reported by Chinese tech website PCPOP, Foxconn is building WPAI version iPhone for China Unicom. WAPI iPhone is assembling in Foxconn’s factories with a codename N88. It’s also mentioned that the 4th generation iPhone’s codename is N90. WAPI is a Chinese National Standard for Wireless, which is also compatible to the worldwide used standard Wi-Fi. Due to China’s regulation, Wi-Fi was remove from China Unicom version iPhone, which has driven away a huge number of penitential buyers. In stead of choosing this Wi-Fi lacking iPhone, they turned to other versions that were released oversea and bought from obscure channels.
Apple claimed at its 2010 Q1 financial results conference that China Unicom had sold 200,000 units in China mainland since iPhone entered China in the end of last October, but that can’t be a number China Unicom could be happy with. Definitely China Unicom is hoping the WAPI version iPhone release can give a strong push for its sales, but till now there’re still no words from China Unicom about the release time.
